Penal measures imposed on Kosovo, originally by the United States of America and then by the European Union “have damaged Kosovo's economy and international image”, Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi has said. He has called the masses a mistake to be corrected.
For the rest of the measures in effect, Bislimi pointed to Hungary, which, according to him, “as the smallest common denominator” did not allow the consensus of many EU nations on removing punitive measures against Kosovo.
Bislimi said there have been countries that have been probing the removal of punitive measures, but that “compromis was found through the smallest common denominator”.
“Hungary insisted on something else, and this position dominated”, Bislimi told EuroNews Albania.
“We have supporters who support lifting measures, but we need someone to insist on it. That would help. There is a sentence in the Council's conclusions that paves the way for this because it says the Council is ready to remove the measures at the request of the High Representative. We know that it was pro-removement of measures, so what we need now is that Borrell sent a letter supporting the removal of measures”, Bislim said as he added he was optimistic about it.
