Calvin Philips' perfect pass found Sterling, which converted close to the back of goalkeeper Dominique Livakovic.
This was Sterling's first career goal for England in an important competition.
And, after the match, he was interviewed by a woman. BBC Sports was hardly pleased to be asked if he had justified his invitation by marking England's winning goal.
After he paused for a few seconds, until he seemed surprised, Sterling responded by saying: ” I'm trying, I'm trying. ”
