After more than a month not seen in public, Nicaragua's president has resurfaced by giving a speech in which he claims the choreography was “a sign from God”.

In Wednesday evening's TV talk, Daniel Ortega claimed that Nicaragua had suffered only one death from the pandemic of the Coronavirus and that the country's three confirmed cases were “imported”.

Ortega has refused to approve the measures for social distance and deadlock, used in other countries, and has in fact encouraged the Nigerians to participate in mass gatherings, writes The Guardian.

Nicaraguans “are not stopped from working, because if this place stops working, it dies“, Ortega said. The government extended the Holy Week school vacation in two weeks; classes are scheduled to resume 20 April.

Ortega did not comment on how many tests have been conducted. Experts suspect there are many undiscovered cases.

Ortega used the address to criticize the United States, saying he is keeping Nicaragua in poor condition and could not even provide health care for his citizens.

The largest affair on Earth is unable to provide its citizens in cities in the United States,” he said. “has lack of beds and medical equipment, because health care is not available for people, for the poor” in developed countries.

Ortega said the pandemic was “a sign from God” against militarism and hegemony.

In a Wednesday statement, the rights group Amnesty International said President Daniel Ortega's “government is flagrantly ignoring international human rights organisations' recommendations regarding the Individual-19 pandemic, putting the health and life of thousands in Nicaragua at risk.
