Serbian authorities have decorated Austrian writer and Nobel Prize laureate Peter Handke for, reportedly, “the extraordinary contribution to representation of Serbia in the field of culture”.
The move is expected to spark reactions in Serbia's neighbouring countries due to the support this writer had offered to the Balkan “Cassap”, Slobodan Milosevic.
“For Serbia, he is a true friend, witnessed even during the most difficult times”, said Dekorte Commission Chairman Sima Avramovic.
“He warmly defended Serbian truth even when it caused him a lot of disagreements and concerns, even after winning the Nobel Prize”, Avramovic added.
The Swedish Academy's decision to award the prestigious award to this writer was sharply criticised by several states and by many prominent figures, writes “Free Europe”.
In protest, the award donation ceremony was boycotted by Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Express newspaper broadcast.
Handke has been charged with justifying Milosevic's crimes during the Balkan wars in the 1930s.
