She made these comments before the European Parliament on World Cancer Day.
The European Commission estimates that the economic impact of cancer in Europe is over 100 billion euros annually.
If no further steps are taken, cases of EU cancer will double over the next 15 years, affecting 40 per cent of people, the Commission warns.
His new strategy is expected to include steps from changing lifestyle to combating air pollution, inoculation and best diagnosis.
The European Commission stresses that prevention will be a priority because, according to him, 40% of cancer cases are derived from causes that can be avoided.
Von der Leyen stressed that the EU's latest scheme of prevention and detection of cancer dates back 30 years.
“Bota has changed. Europe has changed. And, the number of cases is unfortunately increasing”, said von der Leyen, who lost her sister to cancer.
According to EU Statistics Agency data, a new cancer case is diagnosed in the EU every nine seconds, while the disease kills 1.3 million people annually.
