This number of migrants arriving at the US border is much higher than when the American polling organisation “Gallup<1> had for the last time asked this question in December of last year. The detention sites are crowded with people, thus fuelling criticism about handling the situation on the part of the administration.
Support to allow refugee entry from Central America is now higher (57%) compared to almost all previous polls that “Gallup” has been dealing with this issue, including the issue of Syrian refugees in 2015, and refugees from the German Holocaust in the 1930s and '40s.
But there is one case that has surpassed all.
“The only refugees who have collected the greatest support in the RHGallup polls are Albanian refugees from Kosovo during a period of ethnic cleansing there in 1999. At the time, 66% approved the decision but to bring several hundred Albanian refugees from Kosovo to the US”, says “Gallup” reports Koha.net.
It further emphasises that the Democrats were the ones who supported mostly refugee entry, with 85% adopting this policy compared to 82% registered in December.
But the largest rise in support has come to the Republican side, which from 14 percent in December to 24 percent now. The approval among independents has increased from 52 percent in December to 58% today.
Meanwhile, 39 percent of Americans describe the situation on the U.S. border with Mexico as “crisis”, while about 35% of them call it the big “problem”.
