More than one in ten children, either 20 million worldwide, has not been vaccinated last year against life's dangerous diseases, such as measles, diet, and tetanus.
The data was released on Monday in a report compiled by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF.
In the report on global immunization, the two agencies found that the levels of vaccination are stagnating, especially in poor countries and conflict zones.
“Vaxins are one of our most important tools for preventing explosions and world security”, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebrees said through a statement.
According to the report, most independent children live in poor countries, while almost half of them are in only 16 countries: Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iraq, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
The majority of children today are being vaccinated, but many others remain uninoculated. Unexplored are often those most at risk, poorer, more marginalised, affected by conflict or displaced by their homes”, Ghebrases said.
If these children get sick, the report says, they are at risk of the most serious health consequences and are less able to receive the treatment and care they need.
