The protest is considered the largest organised since 2014, when the region stood to support the Umbrella Movement. The government says the bill is designed to strengthen defence and that it will close all legal spaces.
Hong Kong Governor Carrie Lam wants this bill approved before July. Supporters say there are safeguards to prevent someone facing religious or political persecution from being extradited to the continental part of China.
