The two leaders, who have met in China four times, are expected to discuss the North Korean nuclear programme as well as economic issues.
China is extremely important to North Korea as the main trading partner.
Xi's visit comes a week before the G20 summit in Japan, where he will meet with US President Donald Trump.
This will be his first meeting with Kim after that Trump-Kim meeting in February ended without any agreement on de-lelarising North Korea.
