FIFA President Gianni Infantino has proposed extending the tournament, but has decided that such a thing is not practical, Sky Sports reports.
FIFA has explored whether logistics and political complexity could be overcome so that the tour could be expanded from 32 to 48 nationals, but this is impossible because of the short term.
Despite this cancellation, however, FIFA says this idea will not be rejected, since the 2026 World, held in the US, Canada and Mexico, will contain 48 teams.
