Nine years ago, the collapse of the plane in which the Polish president and 95 other people lost their lives has created one of the most important myths in state history around him.
Some Polish people do not believe it was a tragic accident, says the official report. Instead, they are convinced that it was a murder that was orchestrated by several Poles and Russians, and was carried out by the Russians.
The ruling party Law and Justice (PIS) converted such beliefs into ʹcarburanta which helped win the 2015 elections.
But now, with the upcoming European elections and elections in Poland, the Smolensk accident is a topic that the PiS do not know how to approach. The faithful of this theory are still committed to conspiracy theories, but they know they can lose them from the centre that can vote for the Pis.
Of course, there will be comets. PIS will mark the tragic day with numerous activities from the morning to the speech of party leader Jarosław Katzzyński in front of the presidential palace, which was his brother's home, Lech Katzyński, before his death.
The accident of the Polish president's plane has turned into the foundation of the PIS's political identity, helping the party survive the years of opposition, while the state was led by Donald Tusk, now president of the Council of Europe.
With Kaczynski's support, the mythology Smolensk revived because the accident was not. Every month, Kaczynski holds a vigilante in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw, thus communicating with his followers. It promises to reveal the “truth” of the fall, which, he says, is hidden from Polish enemies both inside and abroad.
Another alternative theory has been provided by Defence Minister Anthony Macierewickz, who has ignored earlier investigations and launched news. To prove that the plane exploded in the air before the crash, Anthony Macierewickz draws parallels between sausages and explosive cans.
“We see this when we bake sausages for breakfast”, says Andreze Ziolkowski, a technology expert and explains that sausages and planes explode long side and transversal, writes Politico.
These theories have their followers who are convinced that the fall was orchestrated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tusk.
Insinuates were made public in 2016 in “Smolensk”, in which an investigator comes to the conclusion that it was not an accident.
At the premiere, Kaczynski said the film “simply tells the truth”. Over the years, the theories on Tusk's involvement were political ammunition against him and his political platform, the main rival of the PiS. Tusk was called over and over to testify to the accident.
The Smolensk falsifications ruin our social life since the first day after the accident,” said Tusk last April.
The problem for the PiS is that, despite being in power since 2015, they have failed to fight against conspiracy theory.
The remains of planes are still in Russia, despite demands to return to Poland. The controversial method of digging victims has brought nowhere. Most believe that the plane crashed after attempting to land in the mist and the pilots had no experience, and some strong alternative theories did not exist.
But part of the Poles believe Macierewickz's theory. According to one survey last year, 59 percent feel that plane crash was not the result of the attack, and 26 percent thought otherwise.
A few weeks away from the EU Parliamentary elections, the PiS is trying not to mention Smolensk. On the contrary, they focus on social issues, on helping children and the 13th pension.
The PiS wants to attract moderate, urban voters, embedded by former banker Matthewsz Morawiecki, the current prime minister.
As part of the trial, Macierewitz was removed from office, but remained on the panel that investigated the plane crash. It continues to contain “ ” theory that made it one of the main political figures in the state.
The main cause of the crash is an explosion that occurred while the plane was still in the air”, he officially says.
But the rest of the party ignores it, and the Tusk party points to it as the best example of what the PIS adopts.
“There is still a bad dance in the graves of the Smolensk disaster,” said Polish politician Marcin Cierwiński.
While some right-wing circles still write about “theory of conspiracy”, Kaczyński, however, seems to understand that however much Smolensk was important to him, he would not bring votes.
