Frank-Laqi: The hydro power plant only damages Lumbardhin, but everything around it

Ellen Frank-Lajqi, geographer and environmentalist, as well as one of the protest organisers to oppose the Lumbardh hydropower project in Peja, has said the plants on this river are devastating not only for the river, but for everything around it. In Express Interview on KTV, Frank-Lajqi said that except for the river, with hydropower will [...]
In Express Interview at KTV, Frank-Lajqi has said that other than the river, with hydro-power plants around it, the ecosystem, even tourism, which she says plants build conflicts with the strategic plan for sustainable development in Pec.
This is a very dangerous idea. It is not worth using Lumbard water for energy. In Kosovo there is only one large hydropower plant that harms nature. Everyone else is a tool that harms”, she has said, adding that even experts have praised the plan for building hydropower as inadequate.
Frank-Lajqi has said that the strategic plan for development and construction of hydropower plants clash with each other.
Last “was planned for energy-based strategic development and tourism. But I was thinking about how can energy be invested when tourism breaks down? Many private businesses in Peja and Rugova's Grique have stood up. They're also for ecotourism and they're ruining nature. Tourists come to Kosovo because they are considered the last virgin country in Europe. But they don't see it that way when they get here. Tourism is only one thing at stake, and the nature and destruction of the ecosystem are damaged, and many residents will suffer”, and Frank-Lajqi has continued.
She has said the company, which is meant to build hydropower plants in Rugova's Graque, “Kelkos”, has committed many violations with other constructions in Decani.
More than 80 small hydropower plants are planned in Kosovo or are under way. Decani is a good example. Near Peja and the same company. There it can be seen what destruction has been done there, in 2014 when construction began, Hedrodrin had reacted to the danger. Most of the water is in the tube. It's 30 percent written, but when he actually saw it, there's no point left. It became like the Sahara. 37 thousand inhabitants are supplied with water from the Decani River. For the first time there was a dryer”, she added.
Today it was protested in Pec to oppose the hydropower project, which was launched in 2013, in an agreement between the municipality and “Kelkosit” for the construction of five hydropower plants in Rugova villages. After the protest, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj suspended the project, demanding additional clarifications, but Frank-Lajqi says it must be completely cancelled.
It has indicated that tomorrow they will meet with the two ministries related to the project and has said they will submit a statement with more than 100 associations' signatures.
We will ask for a study on how much water there is in Kosovo. Let's see the violations he committed in Decani. Be an independent body for all hydropower plants in Kosovo and see what is happening in Kacanik, Dragash, Podujevo and the north. Hydro power plants are like mushrooms”, she added.
In the end, Frank-Lajqi has ordered that if the project is approved, the <x0fit could be made today, but tomorrow the risk will come”.
