The Pabuk tropical storm landed in southern Thailand with winds and rains and is expected to be the worst in the region in the last 30 years.
The storm landed at 12:45 local times, bringing down trees in the province of Nachhon Si Thummarat.
It is moving south of Thailand, affecting tourist populations as well.
Many people have fled the islands of Koh Samui, Koko Tao and Koh Phangan, authorities said.
At least two airports have been closed and ferry services have been suspended.
People have been advised to stay indoors until Saturday morning.
Storms are common in Thailand Bay at this time of the year, but Pamuk is thought to be the worst in decades to hit the region at the peak of the holiday season.
