There are numerous videos around the internet, as many Turks are seen burning US dollars in response to President Recep Tayip Erdogan's appeals to abandoning dollars and euros in defense of Turkish lira and boycotting American electronic products
In Kosovo, however, some leading families are considering the decision to give up the iPhone to switch to Samsung mobile phone. This is after the Turkish president has declared traitors to all those using the iPhone, which is an American product.
Turkish lira has actually marked an increase, following the recent decision to raise tariffs on American imports. By decree, Recep Tayip Erdogan increased the tariffs on cars to 120 percent, alcoholic beverages to 140 percent, and tobacco to 60 percent.
Last week, meanwhile, the US doubled the tariffs on Turkey due to its refusal to extradite the US pastor being detained there. The growth of the Turkish lira by 3 per cent was also helped by measures taken by the government aimed at halting local currency speculation.
Despite growth, Turkish lira has lost nearly a third of its value against the dollar since January, raising prices. While explaining the new tariffs, Turkish vice president Fuat Oktay said the increase was a reciprocal measure against the intentional attack on the Turkish economy on the part of the US administration. The tariffs also grew for cosmetic products, rice, and coal.
