When Spanish championship leaders face Atletico Madrid on Saturday, they will be guided by a man whose skills are not discussed, but his leadership has often been discussed. We're talking about Lionel Messin.
This is the first Midnight season as Barcelona captain after Andres Inista's departure, and over the years, he has regularly faced charges that he is not eligible for the role.
Is that right? Should barcha give the captain's tape to someone else? Mess is obviously a big player... but is he a bad captain?
Maradona directs complaints
Many of the most severe criticisms of Mess's leadership abilities have come from Argentina, where he has struggled to gain the unconditional love he enjoys in Barcelona.
Finally, national icons Diego Maradona used an interview with Fox Sports as an opportunity to question the Messy leadership on the national team, where he has been captain since 2011.
The “is useless to create a leader from someone who goes to the toilet 20 times before a match”, Maradona said. “instead of talking to his friends, he prefers playing video games. ”
Messi's defense was led by another Argentinan hero, World Cup winner Mario Kempes.
Every time Diego opens its mouth, it's a problem because he doesn't respect people”, Kempes replied. Diego's “Time has passed and neither is he a good example to say such things”.
It is, however, increasingly difficult to take Maradona seriously. But he spent almost two years working directly with Mess over a period as Argentina coach (2008-2010), so his word is valid.
And Maradona is not alone. Another former Argentina captain, Daniel Pasarell, has also argued that Messy is not suitable for the captain, saying: “The group's leader is different from the way he plays. I admire Mess, but his personality is attracted and honest”.
Mess certainly doesn't fit the traditional style of a captain. Maybe Maradona and Pasarell are right.
