Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj chose this year's campaign to plant trees by planting a tree for his son, Kayan, who came to life a few days ago.
I planted the first tree this year for my son, on whoever would plant a tree for his child, for his son or daughter, even as a contribution to the city, for the environment, for the causes where you believe, to remember something beautiful, planting a tree is the best way. In this city we have become good thanks to cooperation and solidarity, we have learned that when people get together, they perform miracles”, he said.
The launch of a campaign to plant trees also coincided with the day of the United Nations organization. UN representatives in Tirana joined Mayor Veliaj for planting trees in Lake Park as a way of fulfilling its mission in terms of a stable environment in stable cities. Tirana Mayor accompanied by Permanent Co-ordinator The UNDP in Tirana, Brian J. Williams.
Veliaj said Tirana City Hall's goal for this year is not only to break the established record last season of planting but to manage to plant 150 thousand trees.
“Today we have planted the first series of 150 thousand trees for this year's campaign. I think we're gonna break last year's record, which was 126-27 thousand trees. It's a fantastic day to start off with colleagues of UN agencies in Tirana on foot to celebrate concretely, not with seminars, not with conferences, not with speeches, but with a contribution that essentially speaks thousands of words about the United Nations mission. I can't wait for citizens to respond this year by planting trees; it may be under the palace, right here at Lake as we are doing today, or in another territory that will be defined by Tirana City Hall”, Veliaj added.
Eternal Codinator The UNDP in Tirana, Brian J. Williams, expressed his gratitude that Tirana City Hall decided to launch this action right on UN Day, while praising Tirana's care for the environment.
The UN family is very proud that the mayor and the city of Tirana chose today to launch their campaign. It is the United Nations Day, and we seriously think that this effort toward trees is a contribution to a global need, such as environmental care. So this event today, on United Nations Day, shows once again that the leadership of Tirana is demonstrating will, not only in Tirana, but in fact all of Albania. We're so proud and happy to celebrate our birthday, with Mr. Veliaj and the Tirana City Hall, APR and many others are showing such a wonderful leadership here in Albania”, Brian J. Williams.
