European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn has spoken for the Spanish daily “El Pais” Hahn in Madrid attended a meeting of the Mediterranean Union foreign ministers, while from there he also spoke on the Kosovo issue.
The commissioner hopes that after Kosovo and Serbia reach agreement, the five European Union countries that have not recognised Kosovo, including Spain, will reassess their position.
The stance of the entire European Union when we talk about the Balkans is that we either enjoy stability or receive instability”, Hahn has said, when asked whether Spain is adding obstacles to Balkan stability by standing against Kosovo's recognition.
Experiences tell us that long-term peace and stability in the Balkans are achieved only if we look to European perspectives. We have opened up the strategy for the Balkans in February, where we have shown that only countries that are able to solve the problems between themselves will be accepted as new EU members”, Hahn added.
Hahn calls the Balkan region a key agreement that must be reached between Kosovo and Serbia.
According to Hahn, after this agreement is reached, the five EU nations that do not recognise Kosovo's sovereignty will reconsider their stance.
I hope that after the agreement we will be in that situation when the five countries that have not recognised Kosovo's sovereignty will study this agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, and then make the decision”, commissioner Hahn told El Pais.
