Messi placed a clause in his new contract with Barcelona, under which he would be a free player in case the team does not play in one of the above-mentioned leagues, according to El Mundo, broadcast Express.
In this way the Argentinian seeks to defend himself in the event that independence is declared in Catalonia and Barca is forced to play local league.
During negotiations on the new contract, one of the split points was the unstable political situation in Catalonia that led to the unilateral declaration of independence, which was approved by the Catalan Parliament, and therefore prompted authorities in Madrid to activate Article 155 of the Constitution of Spain by placing central authority in Catalonia.
Messi renewed the contract in November last year for another four years with the Catalan club.
