Syria's Kurds have voted for local elections in northern Syria, with the cases taking a step towards establishing a federal system.
Residents of the Kurdish majority areas of northern Syria began voting in the region's first local elections on Friday, as part of a push to cement a semi-aunomical regional government, Russia Today” reported.
Friday's vote is the first stage in the tripartite elections to elect representatives at the district, municipal and regional level.
The vote has been rejected by Syria's central government as “a joke”, but for Kurds it presents a step towards a long-wanted federal system.
Kurds made up about 15 percent of Syria's first war population.
They mainly stayed out of the uprising that erupted in March 2011, instead of silently establishing local control in majority Kurdish areas following the withdrawal of most government troops.
In March 2016, they announced three semi-aunomous regions, where voting began Friday for neighborhood-level representatives or <x0komune”./Periscopi/
