My “Parter in life is Jewish, one of my sons is gay, the other is an anarchist and I'm a party of the left wing as well as a daughter of immigrants. If Golden Dawn comes to power, our only problem will be that at which time we're going to be placed”, so I start her confession, almost personal, director Angelique Kourounis, when the previous evening brought to Tirana, the documentary “Gigim: A personal matter”, at the Academy of Film “Marubi”, within the 12th edition of the International Film Festival for Human Rights.
She is a journalist who has been delving into the organisation of the Greek neo-Nazi party “The Golden Agim”.
Financial decline, political instability and family relations have been placed in the spotlight, while the documentary is trying to reveal “what is in the heads of Golden Dawn (Golden Dawners), which are removed as victims of” of the system. Golden Dawn “has never hidden his ideology”.
Its impact on the polls may have been almost existing before, but the compliance of this staunchly trusted ideology in Greece was cultivated by many clergymen and most of the media, but also by the political system, the fertile terrain in which the organisation thrives.
The director is searching on the issue from a personal point of view, through its anxieties, concerns and fears, as it has cost many years and two other television documentaries the treatment of the neo-Nazi party, which has taken third place in the Greek political system after three decades of dark but bloody activity.
A journalist and director have been shooting for years in a local group of the Greek neo-Nazi party “The Golden Agim”.
Director Kourounis, present in Tirana, after the documentary's design has held a conversation, stopping back in the same principles as he created the film, but saying “is not a propagandistic film, but a movie engaged”.
Its dilemmas that everything, even life, could be predicted from this film, have confessed how it was hit by the people of the Golden Agent <x0).
The director has put before the public the importance of anyone's presence in these situations, especially when it comes to the discussion: being a witness or a accuser. Her case: witness, carries the same weight, same importance.
The documentary begins from the creation of this group, how it won the hearts of Greeks until the entry of 18 of its members into the Greek parliament, protests that received widespread support from the Greek people, the prison sentences of key leaders, important political killings, but even immigrants, until 2015, when there is still a population movement of harsh political tones.
Enraged citizens explain Couronnis' union and the massive support that the Golden Action “Agim” took, expressing that they were resurrecting the spirit of Nuremberg.
It has sufficed this documentary, putting the director on conditions of a life full of anxiety for tomorrow to express to the Albanian public that “for many reasons is no longer my Greece”.
Stopping to the fact that from those films has stood the truth, Kourounis said that through films he wanted to know, enter deeper, that this political force was established in Greece.
A lot of people have criticized this film because I gave them a lot of room to talk to members of this group. I've chosen the people who showed their opinion. Nothing is black and white. On the other hand, we fought to make this movie happen for five years. I was among them with the cameraman, I was hit. These guys were killers... They hate colored people, Jews, homosexuals, Muslims, and Albanians. They hate everything, anyone else, who's like them”.
