Angela Merkel has voted against marriage between the same gender in Germany, as she believes the “marriage is between a man and a woman”.
Despite its opposition, Bundestag voted to legalise the same gender marriage with 393 votes for and 226 against, and the Chancellor said she hopes this move will improve social cohesion.
For me, marriage in German law is marriage between a man and a woman, and that's why I didn't vote in favor of this bill today”, she told reporters right after the historic vote.
“I hope the vote today not only promotes respect among different opinions but also brings greater social cohesion and peace”, she said.
