On August 5th last year, Davidson poured boiling water on Cowan's head, who was imprisoned for life after the kidnapping and murder of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe on the Sunshine coast in December 2003.
The court heard Davidson, who looked at Cowan's movements for a month to find the best way to harm him.
Prosecutor Mark Whitdread said Davidson poured a bucket of boiling water over Cowan's head while 46-year-old played cards with other prisoners at the Wolston Correcting Centre in Queensland.
He then hit Cowan in the head with a bucket three to four times.
Cowan received superficial burns at 15 percent of his body, including his head, chest and leg, and was treated at the hospital to prevent infection.
The killer of children was always disfigured.
Justice Ian Dearden sentenced Davidson to three-year prison Monday, but in time he will be released on bail in late November.
