October 3rd is celebrated annually in Germany as “Union Day”, the day when the two German states created after the circumstances of World War II finally came together. Not to repeat the story, but to open a new page, with united, democratic and open Germany, the engine of economic development and guarantee the European Union's political and human values.
The two Germanys joined even though their neighbours and major European powers opposed the union. Against were Poland and France, Italy and Britain, where extremely active against the union process has been former Prime Minister Thatcher. Great powers were opposed for largely selfish reasons, according to the conservative principle of maintaining the balance of power. But history is progressive, and unjust balances always break down. So the Germans realized their dream based on their own will, and on the support of the United States, this extraordinary partner of the self-determination of peoples. The German Union has then supported many divided nations, such as those nations. Irishmen, or us Albanians.
Today, we are told that our union is impossible and incorrigible, that neighbors are against and that great powers do not want. But let us remember that Germany also did not join with one step. Initially they signed the treaty to unify monetary, economic and social policies, then a series of other agreements, and eventually made the best action for their people and for all of Europe, they joined.
We today wish all Germans and Germany on Union Day, and we set them an example for Kosovo joining Albania. This union will take place in the alliance with the US and Germany, when Kosovo and Albania are governed by wise, knowledgeable, honest and national politicians. And that day, as June 11th showed us, is not far away.
The Union of Germany not only contributed but was crucial to the unification of Europe. Even our union will surely contribute to the European Union.
