During his talks in Brussels with Prime Minister Ana Brnabiq, Hahn thanked Serbia for its key role in stabilising the region, reports “b92”, Periscopi broadcasts.
“I am very pleased that the first official visit by Prime Minister Brnabiq is to Brussels, which shows the importance and commitment it makes to the relationship with the EU. A major job has been done, which will soon be paid off with the opening of new chapters (negotiate for EU membership)”, Hahn said.
He further noted that Serbia was moving quickly to take advantage of the moment it came after European Commission President Jean-Claudie Juncker's speech, where a clear signal was given to the region that the EU clearly supports Western enlargement policy in the Balkans.
Serbia is well positioned as one of the main countries in the Eurointegration process”, the commissioner said. “The EU is open to new approaches that will come at the moment when the countries meet the” criteria, he added.
Hahn described the process as a marathon “calculated as fast, but also how well reforms can be implemented by accession chapters”.
“We want to move towards Serbia's EU entry, and when that happens, it is in the hands of Serbia”. No doubt, Serbia belongs to Europe and will soon become part of the European family”, he said.
He said he was encouraged by Serbia's progress and the sense of responsibility of Prime Minister Brnabiq when it comes to rule of law.
He also thanked Brnabyqi for Serbia's key “role in the region in terms of stability” that the country has reached “through dialogue and cross-border co-operation”.
Hahn also said he spoke to Brnabyk about the “objections Belgrade had” regarding the position of the European Commission when it comes to Kosovo and Catalonia cases.
“I understand the sensitivity of this issue in Serbia, and it is good to speak and resolve it. It is important to look into the future to see what can be done about President Aleksandar Vuciq's bold initiative over an internal dialogue and how to support the further development of Serbia and the” region, Hahn concluded.
The prime minister said he sees Serbia's European integration as a process based on three fundamental principles on economic development and macroeconomic stability, public administration reform and rule of law.
Now is the time to focus on the third pillar, meaning on rule of law, Brnabyq said, adding that Serbia is not working on these reforms for the EU but to get a more transparent, more efficient and predictable judiciary.. /Periscopi/
