The leader of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has said the use of police sticks and rubber bullets by the Spanish police is unwarranted violence.
He has publicly denounced the use of police sticks and rubber bullets by police officers during the independence referendum in Catalonia.
The polling stations are opening today from 9: 00 p.m. in Catalonia, despite fierce opposition from Madrid.
