The actor was in a wheelchair because of the effects of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although the disease progressed in a short time, he said that he wanted to continue acting.
“I still have my brain and still have my speech”, he said in December in a discussion on the panel organised by I Am ALS and Brilliant Minds, adding that he was willing to do almost anything.
Unfortunately, he could not fulfill that wish. He spent his last days surrounded by family members. His wife Rebecca Gayheart sought divorce in 2018, but they agreed in March 2025. His family confirmed the sad news of his death in a statement to People magazine.
“throughout his entire battle with ALS, Eric became a passionate lawyer for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same war. He will miss us very much and will always be remembered with love”, they declared, among other things.
