An international team of researchers may have finally discovered what makes someone “col”.

And no matter where you live, personality traits that make someone look “col” seem to be the same worldwide, according to the study published this week in Journal of Experimental Psychologywrites CNN.

Researchers found that, compared to people who are perceived as good “” or “preferable”, those who are perceived as “ “” are seen as the most exclusive, hedonistic, powerful, adventurer, open and autonomous.

The most surprising thing was to see that the same qualities appeared in every country”, said Todd Pezout, associate marketing professor in Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez In Chile and co-chairman of the study.

Whether it's China, Korea, Chile or the U.S., people like those who challenge borders and promote change”, he said. That's why I would say that "cool" represents something more fundamental than the label itself "x3>.

“Cool” is not the same as “well”

Researchers ) by Universidad Adolfo IbáñezUniversity of Arizona i n University of Georgia There were experiments from 2018 to 2022 with almost 6,000 people in a dozen countries: Australia, Chile, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States.

Participants were asked to think of a person in their lives who perceived him as “col”, <x2yo cool”, good “or” Then they were asked to assess the person's personality by using two degrees: the scale of the “Great Personal Types” a scientific model widely used to describe personality features ) and “Portret” that measures the individual's basic values.

Participants steadily linked being calm, conscious, universalist, polite, warm, secure, traditional, and consistent with being a good person, more than being a person “Being able was considered a quality both for “cool” and for good “”, but not a distinctive one or the other.

But the formula for being <x0col” included six features: the most extreme, hedonist, powerful, adventurer, open and autonomous regardless of the person's age, gender or educational level.

Pizzut doesn't think these qualities “col” can be learned.

“We are born with those qualities”, he said. “Five of them are personality traits, and personality traits are usually quite stable”.

The study showed that people “col” and the “good” are not the same, but can share some common qualities, said study co-chairman Caleb Warren, associate marketing professor in University of Arizona.

For someone to be viewed as écool, it usually has to be somewhat pleasing or admirable, which makes it similar to a good person”, Warren said in a press release. However, people often have other qualities that are not necessarily considered good in a moral sense, such as hedonism and power”.

One limit to the study was that only people were involved in it who understood what “col” means. Pezziut said it would be interesting but difficult to determine whether the findings would be similar in more traditional cultures or in remote communities that may not be very familiar with this concept.

We don't know what we would find in extremely traditional culture or groups dealing with survival”, Pezout said.

And one thing we would propose is that in those cultures, people don't play such an important role, because innovation or cultural innovation means not so much in those societies”, he added. So I would say that people probably exist in those cultures, but their role is not as big and perhaps not as in other cultures”.

“Cool” can be a controversial topic

When asked to mention a public figure or a famous character representing “ ”, Pizzuti immediately mentioned Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

It's a controversive figure, but someone who comes to mind right away is Elon Musk”, Pezout said, adding that he meets all six features identified in the study.

The muscle is “without a doubt powerful” and autonomum, he said, and appears as extrovert because of his presence on social media platforms and the media.

I hear he's shyer, maybe more attracted than he looks, but from outside, he looks very extreme. It's fun. He's part of the podcast and he's always on camera”, Pizzuti explained.

Some of Musk's behavior also looks like hedonist, he said. He smoked marijuana in the most widely followed podcast in the world, The Joe Rogan Experience”.

Pezziut added that Musk's ideas about the colonisation of Mars show him as open and adventurer.

The new research is one of the rare empirical studies that examine exactly what a person “col” does, said Jonah Berger, associate marketing professor in Charles School of Business i n University of Pennsylvania.

“While people have long thought and theorized what does a guy's dealt with, there's not much empirical research on this subject, so it's very positive to see work exploring this field”, Berger wrote on an email (he wasn't involved in the study).

"Although the co-operation can seem like something you're born with, there's obviously steps people can take to go that way”, he said. “Considering how many people want to be cojoles and how much money is spent on this purpose, it seems worth studying”.

Future research in this area can evaluate “col” along with being good or bad, instead of studying it in isolation, said Jon Freeman, associate professor of psychology in Columbia University.

The “in real life can be a positive quality, but it can also have negative meaning in some social contexts. It may be helpful that future research examines the differences between good co-operation and bad '%cool', and the approach of this study provides a fine basis for this”, Freeman wrote on an email (he was also not included in the study).

“From a scientific point of view, écololʹ seems more like a product of social interpretation and construction than of genes, although low level temperament influenced by genes can fuel continued personality construction”, he said.

It's deeply embedded in our social vocabulary because it serves as a short form for complex conclusions. It sums up status signals, belonging and identity in instant but deep stereotype ways. From a scientific point of view, the study of écool is important precisely because it finds out how quick and schematic conclusions on features affect behavior and social dynamics particularly in the era of social media and the culture of impactors”./Periscopi/
