Officials have said 800 National Guard troops, as well as 500 federal law enforcement agents, are expected to be deployed.
The mayor of Washington, DC, Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who has denied that crime is out of control in her hometown, described the deployment of troops as a “authoritarian assignment”.
Trump, has also threatened similar anti-commission New York and Chicago, two other cities controlled by Democrats.
The camouflaged troops have entered the US capital since Trump's announcement Monday.
They are seen setting up barricades outside several government buildings and taking photos with tourists.
23 people were arrested by federal agents Monday evening, according to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavyt. Agents are helping implement local law.
She said the arrests were for murder, criminal acts with firearms, drug trafficking, shameful acts, prosecution, non-aware means and other crimes.
This is just the beginning. During the coming month, the Trump administration will follow and arrest every violent criminal in the District that violates the law, undermines public security and risks Americans who enforce the” law, Leavitt said.
FBI Director Cash Patel later said FBI agents were involved in about half of these arrests.
Both the mayor of Washington and the city police chief said earlier in the day they shared the same goal with federal agents.
Bowser called on members of the community of “to protect our city, protect our autonomy, protect our local governance and come to the other side of this boy and make sure they choose a Democratic Chamber so we have an obstacle to this authoritarian push”, according to the New York Times.
This comes as a search for an armed assailant who killed a man Monday evening in Logan Circle, one of Washington's most fashionable neighborhoods, just a mile from the White House.
It was the 100th murder registered in Washington DC this year, according to local media.
Police say the suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt and a rifle in his hand.
The shooting prompted the US Secret Service to strengthen security outside the president's house as a precaution.
According to crime figures published by Washington DC's Metropolitan Police, violent acts peaked in 2023 and dropped by 35% last year to their lowest level in three decades.
But the head of the DC Police Union, Gregg Pemberton, has rejected these figures, earlier accusing the city police department of “intentional falsification of crime data, creating a false Narrative of reduced crime while communities suffer”.
FBI data also showed a drop in crime in Washington DC last year a more modest drop of 9%.
Studies suggest that the murder rate in the capital is higher than the average compared to other major US cities. /Periscopi
