In an Instagram post, Nemo said that even though it's “very grateful for the community about this “competition, they no longer feel that this trophy belongs to”.
The artist argued that Israel's participation, during the period the UN International Independent Commission has described as genocide, is contrary to Eurovision values such as unity, inclusion and dignity for all.
The news comes after the EBU General Assembly meeting, where most members considered the vote on Israeli participation unnecessary, broadcast the telegram.
After that, Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, Holland and Iceland announced that they will not participate or broadcast the competition.
Nemo added that Eurovision has often been used for “to soften the image of a state accused of serious actions”, maintaining the claim of political neutrality.
They decided to return the trophy to the EBU offices in Geneva “with a clear message: Live by the values you state”.
