One of the most common beliefs is that leaving home with wet hair causes infections or colds, but what do experts really say about it?
Experiencing from the wet-haired house does not cause” infections, says Dr. Uma Darji. A cold or infection, she explains, requires the presence of a virus or bacteria, and only having wet hair does not create microorganisms from nothing.
Dr. Lori Solomon, associate professor of family and community medicine in New York Medical College, adds:
Many of these common truths pass from generation to generation. Some rely on scientific evidence, but others are just stories. The idea that wet hair leaks is not supported by fact or science”.
Likewise, Dr. Solomon denies claims that this causes sinus infections or headaches, saying there is no data supporting this.
Did the cold weather make you sick?
In fact, cold weather or wet hair does not cause disease. But according to Dr. Alexa Mieses Malchuk, cold stress causes blood vessels to narrow down, and this may lower the immune response.
This means that if you are exposed in cold with wet hair, you may feel more sensitive to disease because immunity is a little weakened.
Dr. Uma Darji explains: The cold air and wet hair can cause body temperature to drop, causing blood vessels to narrow down their noses and respiratory paths. This makes it harder for the immune system to capture and fight germs that attack”.
