A professional cleaning woman from Zapatas Clearing Services, Kellsie, has shared several simple ways to ward off unwanted aromas, and one of them uses a ingredient found in every kitchen: vanilla extract.
As a professional janitor, these are four tricks I always use for bad smells at home. They're far more effective than candles or sprayers and you can try them right away,” she said.
According to Kellsie, if the removal of perishable foods is not enough, a thorough cleaning should be done:
- Take out shelves and drawers;
- Wash them and wipe them clean;
- Slip the surfaces with a mixture of two tablespoons of vanilla and half glass of water, then wipe them with kitchen paper or microfibra rags without washing them.

Nielsen-Massey experts warn that vanilla extract should be used carefully, since it is meant for cooking. For stronger odors, you can put some points directly into the sponge.
If you prefer natural alternatives, Delish experts suggest the use of lemon, bread soda, and salt.
“Open a soda box and place it in the fridge. If you don't suck the scent, cut off a lemon, spray it with bread soda and salt, and place it on a plate inside the refrigerator. This usually works,” explain them.
The bread soda neutralizes the aromas because it's basic and reacts to acid aromas. lemon, thanks to cytric acid, it helps clean up and disinfect natural surfaces.
The result? A clean refrigerator, no bad smell and a nice vanilla smell.
