The woman had been walking on the island of Lizard, with other passengers from the tourist ship “Cor Adventurer” on Saturday, but is believed to have separated from the group to get some rest.
The ship left the island around sunset but returned hours later after the crew realized that the woman had disappeared. A major research operation found the woman's body Sunday morning, the BBC writes, broadcasts Periscopi.
Australian Marine Security Authority (AMSA) said it is investigating the case and will meet with the ship's crew when it docks in Darwin later this week.
A spokesman for The AMSA said it was first announced for the missing woman on Saturday night by the ship's captain.
The authority said it will co-operate with other relevant agencies to investigate the case and that it takes passenger safety and crew seriously.
Coral Expeditions Executive Director Mark Fifield said the staff has contacted the woman's family and is offering support for “tragic death”.
“While investigations into the incident are ongoing, we are very sorry that this happened and we are offering our full support to the woman's” family, Fifield said.
Queensland police said a report will be prepared for the legal doctor concerning the woman's unexpected and undisputed “death.
