12 best movies to see this October!

These are the ten films you have to watch this month, including Dawn Johnson as a MMA star, the return of Daniel Day-Lewis and Julia Roberts to the campus drama of Luca Guadagnino.

The Smashing Machine

Anyway Johnson is synonymous with high-budget films, but he manages to prove himself as a serious actor in The Smashing Machine, a grim biographic film written and directed by Benny Safdie (Co-ordinator of Good Time and Uncout Gems). Johnson plays the role of Mark Kerr, a mixed martial arts artist who won tournaments in the early days of sports, before becoming the global sensation today. Although he enjoys punching and kicking his opponents to the core, the games affect his physical and mental health, and he is soon struggling with addiction and other people. Emily Blunt also plays Kerr's girlfriend. It's a movie that feels so glorious,” writes Hannah Strong in Little White Lies, “serious in his description of maleity that is fragile and not toxic, while still facing the question of why someone would choose to make a living in such a barbarous way. ”

Anemone

Daniel Day-Leweis hasn't been in a movie since Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Threead film in 2017. He announced his withdrawal from the profession that same year, but, fortunately for us, his generation's most esteemed actor has been lured back into the film business from the prospect of working with his son, Ronan Day-Leweis. Together, both Day-Leweis have co-signed Anemone, whom Day-Lewis Jr leads, while Day-Lewis Sr plays the lead. He plays a former soldier who served in Northern Ireland many years ago and has since lived in solitary confinement in the English village. But now his teenage son (Samuel Bottomley) is in trouble, so his distant brother (Sean Bean) has come to find him. With Samantha Morton in the lead role, this “intensive, happy, sometimes absurd and sometimes absurd” is “a truly extraordinary drama for the brothers, mothers and, yes, fathers and sons”, writes David Fair at Rolling Stone. And it's just as much a presentation with a new talent as it's a re-representation with a veteran talent. ”

Roofman

“The Kulmi's Man” was the nickname the media gave to Jeffrey Manchester, an army veteran who robbed a series of fast food restaurants in the late 1990s by climbing up their roofs and digging holes in the buildings. He was arrested later, but later escaped from prison and hid in a toy shop, sleeping in the back rooms during the day and wandering in the shop at night. Derek Cianfrance (Blowe Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pies) has turned this into a more bizarre tale that fiction into a drama of protagonists Channing Tatum in the role of Manchester and Kirsten Dunst in the role of a toy shop employee with whom he has romance. David Rooney in The Hollywood Reporter calls “The Kulmi's Man” “a true crime story that is also a mild study of characters... in a delicate tone of ease, comedy, romance and silenced melancholia”.

Tron: Ares

The Tron movies don't happen very often. The first, in which Jeff Bridges' programmer entered a world of sensitive video games, was released in 1982. The following film, with Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in key roles, did not appear until 2010, or 28 years later. And it took another 15 years for work to end in Tron: Ares, an adventure of science fiction with Jared Letto in the role of a digital being that materializes in the physical world. It may be best, however, that this third film has lasted so long, since its anxieties regarding artificial intelligence can hardly be more current. John Candy played in more than 30 films, including “Uncle Buck” and “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”, before dying of a heart attack in 1994, when he was only 43 years old. His colleagues loved him as much as the viewers did, so so so many of these co-operations show up in this documentary run by Colin Hanks. Besides the director's father, Tom Hanks, actors who lovingly remember Canadian comedy include Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Catherine O'Harea, Eugene Levy and Macauley Culkin, who viewed him as a very needed father figure. “It's a genuine, warm love party without being boring”, writes Beandre July in IndiaWire. If you've already loved John Candy, this documentary will make you love him even more. If you were born after his time, it would be a pleasant presentation. ”

After the Hunt

Twenty-five years after Julia Roberts won an Oscar for the best actress for Erin Brockovich, don't be surprised if she wins another for the Afterer the Hunt, a campus drama directed by Luca Guadagno (M Call by Your Name, Challengers). Roberts and Andrew Garfield plays Alman and Hank, two philosophy professors at Yale University. Both expect to be promoted soon, assuming that nothing goes wrong in their department so when Alma's favorite student (Ayo Edeby) claims that Hank attacked her, she is not sure how to react. The film “opens every point of interest with interest in today's climate ʹ the culture of cancellation, consent, institutional isolation and racism”, writes Iana Murray in The skin. “Roberts is excellent in one of its best roles in years, masking vulnerability behind a frightening wall that makes it unreadable. It's fitting for a movie that deals with the eroded power of secrets and stories we tell about ourselves. ”

Kiss of the Spider Woman

With nothing to do with Marvel's Spider-Man series, “Kiss of the Spider Woman” was adopted by Kander and Ebb's sketchy musical, winner of the Tony Prize, which in turn was adopted by the 1985 film and 1976 novel Manuel Puig. Most of it is developed within the walls of a filthy prison cell in 1983 when Argentina was in the hands of a military dictatorship. Diego Luna plays Valentine, an activist who refuses to appoint his friends. Nathiuh plays Molina, his cellmate, who is instructed to reveal Valentine's secrets. To spend the time and earn Valentine's trust, Molina tells him about his favorite movie, and so we see scenes from a Hollywood musical charmer with protagonist a dike of the big screen, played by Jennifer Lopez. Peter Debruge writes in Variety that the latest version of the “Kiss of the Spider Woman” was created “in an amazing way” by Bill Condon, director of “Dream Girls” and film “Beauty and the Beast” of Disney. “Sad as it may sound, the musical finds rare pieces of light and an unexpected link in the most desperate places. ”

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You

Some movies offer the perfect way to relax and relax after a hard day. And then there is Id Legs I'd Kick You, such a stressful film that, according to Chase Hutchinson in The Wrap, <x0 is felt like a panic attack that develops for almost two hours”. Rose Byrne won the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival for her nervous performance as a mother on the eve of the crisis: her daughter is sick, broken plumber is destroying her apartment, her missing husband (Christan Slater) keeps screaming on the phone, and her therapist (Connan O'Brien) is just making things worse. It Was Just an Accident

Jaffar Panari's films are so bold of criticism of Iran's regime that he has been imprisoned and banned from making films, but, miraculously, he has never stopped working. And he's still at the peak of his powers, as shown by film “It was just an Accident”. This year's Golden Palm winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival, this farce story, but human and serious story, focuses on Vahid Mobasser, a mechanic who is convinced that one of his clients (Ebrahim Azi) is the man who tortured him in prison. He wants revenge, but since he was blindfolded while in custody, how can he be sure that he found the right man? Tomris Laffly says at Elle: “Initially, a thunder of revenge, then a broad and dignified questioning of notions such as revenge, forgiveness, morality and closure, this year's earned Golden Palm winner presents an excellent argument for getting caught up with our humanity for loving life, whatever the circumstances. ”

Bugonia

Yorgos Lanthios and Emma Stone, the respective directors and stars of The Favourite, Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, join back in Bugonia for another distorted and sometimes terrible comedy, this remake of a South Korean movie, Save The Green Planet (2003). Stone plays the role of the quiet and refined executive director of a pharmaceutical firm that has mistreated its employees. One of these employees (Jesse Plemons) grabs him and locks him in his basement, so she assumes he's angry about his working conditions. But kidnapping has more than that: he is convinced that the executive director is actually a member of an alien race that has monitored Earth. Randica Seth writes in Vogue that “will find much to enjoy in high performance, black humor, bursts of bloody violence and strange turns, including a staggering final sequence. During the two turbulent hours, sometimes troubled, it is a very difficult trip. ”

Springstein: Deliver Me From Nowhere

Are we leaving the era when pop biographies like Ray, Walk the Line and Elvis would squeeze decades of life into a star in two hours? Last year's “A movie Complete UnKnown” focused on Bob Dylan's early career, and now film “Springstein: Deliver Me from Nowhere” dramatizes an even shorter chapter in the history of his subject's life. Played by Jeremy Allen White, Bruce Springstein appears doing only one album, “Nebraska” of 1982. He's on the verge of becoming a star, but he's also experiencing a crisis of self-confidence. His solution: withdrawing into his bedroom in New Jersey with a four-track recorder and an acoustic guitar, to work in a band of songs about the frustration of the workers. Jeremy Strong (Succession) also plays the role of Springstein's manager, Ion Landau, while Stephen Graham (Adolescence) plays his drunken father in his 1950s black and white returns. “If some fans expect the equivalent of a pack of best hits, think again”, writes Pete Hammond on Deadline. “Springstein: Deliver Me from nowhere is indeed an intelligent and well thought out journey into the soul of an artist. ”

Hedda

“Hedda Gabler” of Henryk Ibsen was first staged in 1891, but Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) has updated the classic performance in more than one way. The law writer has moved the action to an English residence in 1954, where the newly married antiheroeina is hosting a long, luxurious and increasingly chaotic holiday. Two other key differences in the text are that the main character (played by Tesssa Thompson) is now a woman of color in a mostly white environment, and her former girlfriend is now a woman (Nina Hoss). The most important update, however, is that DaCosta has made adapting it to an intensively elegant and sensational issue, as epitomized by the leading lady. It's a “that's evil emotion” to see Thompson “yours “in a full attitude, energy and color”, writes Christy Puchko in IndiaWire. “Great, hot and challenging, this is a show of love, sex and regret burning like a whiskey dose”.
