US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would not prejudge the results of the presidential elections to be held in Venezuela on Sunday, but called on parties to respect the democratic process.
Shortly before the start of voting in the South American country, Blinken said at a news conference in Tokyo that the US and the international community will be watching closely the vote.
The United States will not prejudge the result. This is a choice Venezuelan people have to make, but the Venezuelan people deserve a choice that truly reflects their will, without any manipulation”, Blinken said.
Washington eased sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry last October in response to an agreement between President Nicolas Maduro and opposition parties, but later re-established sanctions on actions Washington said threatened a comprehensive democratic election process.
