Canada's Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned Monday following a clash with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on issues involving the way the US possible tariffs are treated, giving another blow to an already unpopular government.
In a burning resignation letter, Freeland dismissed Trudeau's push for increased spending as a political fraud that could harm Otawa's ability to deal with the 25% import tariffs, US President-elect Donald Trump says he will decide.
Freeland said she was resigning after a meeting last Friday with Trudeau, who asked her to take a smaller post after the two had been debating for weeks on spending.
Its resignation came just hours before it presented an economic update in the autumn to parliament, a document widely expected to show that the liberal minority government had created a much larger budget deficit than anticipated. Officials said the document would be revealed Monday as planned.
Freeland's 56th resignation, which also served as deputy prime minister, leaves Trudeau without a key ally when his government is already in trouble, Reuters reported.
