A convoy carrying the body of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has arrived at his home in Tokyo.

Abe was shot dead while speaking at a political campaign event Friday morning in the southern town of Nara.

Police investigating the assassination have said the suspect was angry at a specific “organisation”.

The alleged attacker, named Tetsuya Yamame, 41, believed Abe was part of this organisation, they said.

Yamame has admitted to firing him with a weapon made by himself, according to police.

As a car carrying Abe's body arrived at his residence in Tokyo, members of his ruling Liberal Democratic Party, dressed in black, lined up to pay their respects.

Current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to visit this afternoon.

According to local media reports, a night watch will be held Monday, and Abe's burial will take place on Tuesday.
