In hot summer days, taking a bottle of cold water in the car while driving seems like the most natural act, but firemen say that can have harmful consequences.
A firefighting unit in Oklahoma and an energy company in Idaho recently demonstrated how a bottle of water partially filled with water can focus sunlight and start a fire.
David Richardson, of the Midwest Fire Department in Oklahoma, has told KFOR that the rays of the sun “use the liquid and clear material of the bottle to develop a seal hearth and, to be sure, that can cause fire. The sun's rays pass through the bottle, and when it's filled with water it acts like a magnifying glass like the optical glasses” Richardson said.
A test in the department, outside of the car, shows sunshine that passing through the bottle increased the temperature of a piece of paper to 250 degrees, KFOR reports.
Representatives of Idaho Power have also spoken of this potential danger in an Fb post, with a video showing sunlight passing through a bottle of water that created smoke and burning marks in the car seat, as indicated by the technician Diony Amustegi.
