The decision marks a formal Stockholm step towards membership in the US-led military alliance, ending neutrality for decades -- as Ukraine's Russian invasion has marked a dramatic turn of security and geopoliticalism in Europe.
It looks very serious and it seems that we have reached a conclusion that is best for Sweden. We don't know how long it will last, but we estimate it will take a year until we join. This week the application will be submitted, along with Finland and then the application will be processed by NATO”, the Swedish Foreign Minister announced.
