Reports from the city point to road battles as Russian forces slowly move their way to the centre.
Ukrainian forces have made strong resistance, costing many lives lost, and a region official has pledged that they will stay and fight.
If Russian forces successfully captured the city, which seems to happen, they would be able to take control of the entire Luhansk region - their biggest victory to date in the three-month conflict.
Pushing forward to capture the entire Donnetsk region also seems to be the next target, but it will be a difficult task.
They would have to capture the important town of Kramatorsk and control the main roads and certainly expect more fighting.
