According to the Food and Veterina Agency over the past four months, about 40 thousand pounds of meat and its byproducts have been removed from the market. Meanwhile, the Consumer Protection Department of the Ministry of Commerce has accepted over 1,000 complaints from consumers during this period alone.
The Food and Veterinary Agency is the state authority that has the main responsibility for controlling the quality of food in Kosovo. During four months of this year, inspectors from this agency have removed a significant quantity of suspicious products that do not meet the conditions for consumption.
So has the spokesman for this agency, Lamir Thaci, who told Radio Kosovo that these products are mainly from the veterinarian sector.
“From the beginning of the year until now we have removed suspicious products that have not met the consumer conditions from the market. Only by the veterinarian sector are about 40 thousand pounds of meat and meat byproducts that have different types of”, he said.
Thaci said the agency has also dealt with bird flu, where in any farm that has had positive cases, measures have been provided by law. According to him, the situation with this flu in Kosovo is well managed.
“We from last year actively are dealing with combating bird flu diseases Aviano Influence. Even this year there have been cases with which we have acted according to the legal standard. Farms which have proved positive we have taken action under the law in force, meaning that birds have been eliminated on farms that have resulted positive. So far I can say that we are in the direction that we have managed well the bird flu”, he said.
AUV spokesman Lamir Thaci has called on consumers, who have doubts based, to report the agency so that measures can be taken.
He said food safety should be the first in whatever economic circumstances or crisis.
” Food consumed always needs to be safe. Whoever has any basic doubts should announce our authority and, under the law, take measures on ground”, he said.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Protection Department in the Ministry of Trade and Industry has accepted 1089 complaints from consumers during this year's four months alone. Of them in the process of review are 696 complaints, only 272 cases have been resolved, while 121 complaints have been rejected.
Officials from this department urge consumers to seize the possibility that any irregularities facing the Consumer Protection Department are directed.
