The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and data from 12 healthy and obezese people aged 19-39 was collected for the study.

Total body fat levels remained the same in both groups, but people who slept for four hours had high levels of visual fat.

“Although there was a reduction in calories and weight during sleep recovery, internal fat continued to rise. This suggests that insufficient sleep is a previously unknown cause for depositing visual fat and that sleep compensated, at least in the short term, does not reverse organic fat accumulate. In the long term, these findings imply insufficient sleep as a contribution to the obesity epidemic, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, Somers said.

Those who were part of a limited sleep group also received about 300 calories a day than their peers, resulting in weight gain. Increasing food consumption included a 17 - percent increase in fat consumption and a 13 - percent increase in protein consumption in their diet.
