Making more sleep can be a useful way to remove excess pounds, suggests a new study.
Experts found that an increase in one hour or more sleep per night could reduce about 270 calories from people's daily diets, equivalent to about three chocolate cookies.
Over the course of three years, this could lead to a loss of 118 pounds [1,8 kg], simply by sleeping more, researchers said.
A team from the University of Chicago discovered how sleep interacts with obesity and while conducting a clinical test of 80 adults.
They found that young overweight adults who usually slept less than 6.5 hours a night were able to add 1.2 hours of extra sleep overnight after they submitted to counsel to improve their sleeping habits.
The results showed that getting more sleep reduced the total amount of food by an average of 270 calories a day, where some people consumed 500 calories less.
Dr. Esra Tasali, from the University of Chicago's sleep center, said the study was not intended to examine weight loss.
But within two weeks, we've established evidence showing a decline in calories and a negative balance of energy, the amount of calories taken is less than the calories burned”, she said.
“If healthy sleep habits are maintained for a longer time, this would lead to weight loss over the passing of”, Tasal said.
A lot of people are trying to find ways to lower their calories to lose weight, but only by sleeping more, you will be able to significantly reduce it”, she added.
