Indonesia's parliament is expected to adopt a new penal code that will condemn sex outside of prison marriage, officials have confirmed.
An earlier draft of the code was scheduled to be adopted in 2019, but it triggered nationwide protests. Tens of thousands protested a set of laws, especially those restricting civil liberties.
Some changes that have been made include a provision that may allow the death penalty to be replaced by life imprisonment after 10 years of good behaviour. The criminalisation of abortion, except for rape victims, and the prison sentence for “black imagination”, still remains in code.
No offense from the president or state institutions, as well as pre-marriage coexistence.
According to the latest draft of November 24th, which was provided by Reuters -- sex outside marriage -- which can only be reported by close relatives -- has a maximum sentence of one year.
Indonesia has hundreds of local rules that discriminate women, religious minorities and people LGBTQ+. Code changes will be the “a major obstacle to Indonesian democracy,” said the Human Rights Watch organisation.
