The European Union has frozen Russian assets worth about 17 billion euros since Moscow invaded Kiev in February, EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reyes said on October 29th.
“So far, the assets of 90 persons have been frozen, more than 17 billion euros in seven member states, including 2.2 billion euros in Germany”, he said.
Ukrainian officials have called for these assets to be used to rebuild their country after the war.
If these are criminal money confiscated from the EU, it is possible for them to be transferred to a fund for Ukraine”, Reynders said in the interview.
This much is far from the amount needed to finance reconstruction”, he added.
Reynolds also said that this year the first war crimes trials related to the war in Ukraine can be seen.
Tens of states pledged in July to support Ukraine in what they expect to be a long and expensive recovery.
The cost of rebuilding Ukraine after Russia's invasion could reach $750 billion and the wealthy Russians should help cope with this cost, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denies Schmygal had declared in July. /rel
