On Wednesday, the State Department secretary visited Ukraine, where he warned that Russia could strike for a very short time. On Thursday, he stayed in Berlin, where he met with German, British and French officials to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the danger from Russia.
State Department officials have said Blinken will try to provide Lavrov with a diplomatic breakthrough to reduce tensions.
Speaking to her American counterpart, German chief diplomat Annalena Baerbock, pledged immediate action against any Russian invasion and did not rule out the deployment of measures she said, “could have economic consequences for the”.
In Friday's talks, big things are at stake, but there are few expectations they will produce any important agreement on resolving the crisis. Americans want to talk about avoiding war in Ukraine, while the Russians want to talk about their demands that NATO not expand to the east.
