Friendships are a very important phenomenon but also complex at the same time. They offer us an extraordinary source of satisfaction. But sometimes, when faced with the end of a friendship, it causes us great pain.

In a new study published in “Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences”, researchers conducted half-term interviews structured with 20 participants (at an average age of 35) in a university laboratory. A total of 2 studies were conducted, aimed at understanding why people end their friendships.

The first study consisted of long interviews conducted by scholars. As soon as each interview was completed, an open survey was conducted on the issue, calling on the same participants to retype as many reasons for an end to a friendship with the aim of further confirmation of the answers without a present scholar and the embarrassment that this may have brought. The following 55 reasons, structured in 4 major categories, were revealed.

A subsequent study conducted over 557 participants (at an average age of 31.6 for women and 34.8 for men) urged participants to assess the possibility of each of the 55 reasons why they could end a friendship.

The most significant factors in ending a friendship were found to be generally egoism and that they were more likely to end their friendship, those who saw only their own interests, who were not supporters of their friend, who were dishonest, and who were just receiving without giving.

Second, participants said they would end a long - term friendship because of lack of time and shared interests. Women were more likely than men to show selfishness as a reason, or times when friend/friends were not supportive, or was manipulating, or when a friend showed romantic interest or was romantically involved with someone who liked them, bringing the end of a friendship. On the other hand, men were more likely than women to show physical distance as a reason to cut off a friendship.
