Specialised Prosecutor Jack Smith has spoken at the opening of the first trial in Kosovo's Specialised Chambers in The Hague, where he said today is the important date for this institution. The SPS leader has said the Special Court is inspired by Kosovo voices and is created by acts of the people of Kosovo.
Our trial and judicial processes are seen differently than different people. For one thing, this court is an inspired court of Kosovo voices created with acts of Kosovo people. On August 3, 2015 The Kosovo Assembly established this court through the adoption of the Law on Specialised Chambers and the Specialised Prosecutor's Office, the same day Kosovo's Assembly voted the change of the Constitution of Kosovo on its own to ratify the existence of Kosovo's Specialised Chambers and Prosecutor's Office Within the Kosovo Framework. Through these actions and speaking on behalf of the people of Kosovo, the Parliament assigned these institutions the task of relying on the work of a special investigative task force and judging those responsible for the serious international and cross-border crimes committed on Kosovo territory and parts of Albania during January 1st 1998 to December 31st 2000. Six years later, when the first trial is beginning, this court is proud to signal Kosovo's people's commitment to a legal state and to a transparent justice”, Smith has said.
