The SCI ranks 60 international destinations based on digital security, health security, infrastructure, personal security, as well as environmental security -- a category that was added for the first time this year.

Asian cities, such as Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka, have been in the first places constantly, but for 2021 it ranks a European city. Copenhagen was declared the safest city in the world for 2021, gathering 82.4 points from 100 in the annual report. Environmental security affected the rankings of Denmark's capital, which in 2019 stood in eighth place.

“A key factor that makes Copenhagen such a secure city is the low crime rate, currently at its lowest level in more than a decade,” said in the report Lars Weiss, the mayor of Copenhagen.

“Copenhagen is also characterized by major social cohesion and a relatively narrow gap in wealth. It's a town where the cleaning assistant and executive director meet each other at the local supermarket and have their kids in the same school. This is one of the fundamental stones of Danish culture and contributes greatly to the high levels of trust and safety from which we benefit. ”
