The prime minister's security service suggests that the leader of the Unity Party, Arnoud van Doorn, was arrested on Sunday. He was behaving in a very suspicious way near the area where he was and the head of government. After being interrogated, the prominent politician was released on Monday.
His defence lawyer strongly condemned the authorities' response, saying Van Doorn should not be arrested because there was no evidence or suspicion of the serious charge.
The politician's arrest was reported only Tuesday, after the media released news that defence measures for Prime Minister Rutte have been stepped up, as it could be the target of an attack or kidnapping by criminal groups.
According to “De Telegrain”, 54-year-old Rutte has been followed several times by persons linked to a group of traffickers, and for this reason this event is considered a serious threat.
Prosecutors at The Hague confirmed to the media Van Doorn's arrest and said an investigation was still under way.
A prosecutor's spokesman said he had doubts that Mr van Doorn was trying to collect information on preparing the assassination attempt
