US President Joe Biden has said that American troops can stay in Afghanistan beyond the retirement deadline, as armed Taliban fighters are not allowing the desperate evaders to arrive at Kabul airport, the BBC writes.
Biden wants US forces to leave by the end of this month, but nearly 15,000 American citizens are stranded in the country.
The American president told ABC News that the riots in Kabul were inevitable.
Washington has pledged to evacuate all American citizens remaining there, along with 50-65,000 Afghans such as former US Army translators.
In all, America has evacuated more than 5,200 people to date, including 2,000 in the last 24 hours.
The Pentagon has told reporters it aims to expand air transport to 9,000 people per day, Periscopi broadcasts.
About 4,500 American troops are under the provisional control of the International Karzai Airport in the country's capital.
Since Sunday 12 people have been killed in and around the airport, a Taliban official told Reuters news agency.
Death was caused by gunfire.
